Band

The Steele Canyon Band Program brings together musicianship, performance, teamwork, and tradition. At the heart of the program is the award-winning Steele Regiment, our competitive marching band and color guard, where students combine music, movement, visual performance, and pageantry to bring a new field production to life each fall.

The Steele Regiment performs throughout Southern California at marching band competitions, home football games, community events, parades, and special performances. Students develop not only as musicians and performers, but also as leaders and teammates while working together toward a shared goal.

Our band experience extends well beyond the marching field. Through Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, chamber ensembles, and other performance opportunities, students explore a wide variety of musical styles, develop strong individual and ensemble skills, and perform throughout the year.

And we believe some of the best musical experiences happen beyond our campus! Our students travel to Disney each year and have the opportunity to participate in our international performance trips every two years, with our next adventure taking us to Japan in Spring 2028.
Whether performing under the stadium lights, on the concert stage, at Disney, or across the world, Steele Canyon Band students become part of a tradition built on excellence, dedication, community, and unforgettable experiences.

All students have the option of using school provided attire or may purchase their own.

Please contact members of leadership if you have any individual questions. Dress rehearsals will be conducted in dress to approve of concert dress. Students will not be allowed on stage without the appropriate attire.

What to Expect for Band Students

Home Football Games

Drumline escorts Varsity team to field at 6 P.M.- 6:10 P.m.
Students will have free time from the time school gets out at 2:40 until 5:45 to eat dinner and do school work.
Arrive at 5:30 PM and change into uniform. (gloves, shoes, BLACK socks, no plumes until halftime).
Pit students begin to bring instruments down to the field.
Be ready with instrument in quad by 6:20 PM.
Band warm up, drumline separate warm up.
Line up at 6:45 and march down to the stadium.
National Anthem played before game. Approx. 7:00 PM
March into stands for pep tunes.
No eating or drinking (other than water) during the game.
Perform field show at halftime.
Pit returns instruments to the field.
Play for the rest of the game.
4th quarter recycling team (changes each game) returns to room to change out of uniform and into recycling gear. Team returns down to the field to collect recycling at the end of the game.
At end of game, march back to room.
Students change out of uniform and clean up room. Students must check with section leaders before they are able to leave.
Students should be ready to be picked up around 9:45-10:00 P.M.

Competitions

Call Time Sheets will be posted on the website A.S.A.P. at least by one week prior to the event
Students will arrive to the school with band shoes, polo shirts, basketball shorts, black socks, and a black shirt.
Students will help transporting equipment to the trailer. Equipment leaders will direct students what needs to be done.
Before students load the bus they need to make sure they have their instrument, shoes, and hat with them. Multiple reminders will be said in order to insure everyone will remember what they need to bring!
On the bus ride we expect maturity and common sense.
Once we arrive at the site students will unload the trailer and change into uniforms. This is where the performance starts. It is really important that Steele Canyon High School has a good reputation when visiting and competing at other schools. Again, maturity and common sense is important.
Stretching, warming up, and getting into performance mode is our top priority.
Performance time! *Alternates, this is the one instance where you will not be performing on the sideline unless we have an absence. The director will let you know if this is the case ahead of time*
Once the performance is completed you will change out of uniforms. And put on your “B” uniform, which is a polo shirt and or band jacket.
As a group we will move into the stands where we will watch other bands perform and wait for the award ceremony.
You are allowed to visit the concession stands and purchase food, or bring your own food. All students must be in a group of 2 or more and must check with the parent chaperones ahead of time.
After the awards ceremony we will meet at the busses, take roll, and head home.
As soon as we turn onto the 94 freeway, you will be asked to call home to remind your parents to pick you up. Keep in mind… we need to unload the trailer and keep the band room clean, but at the same time, the staff and chaperone parents do not want to have to wait on you to get picked up. Please be in constant communication with your parents!

Festivals

Arrive at call time in concert attire. Please check the handbook or ask leadership if you have any questions about the dress code for performances.
Make sure you have everything you need to perform: music, instrument, etc.
Arrive and wait for warm up time with group.
Play pieces for audience and judges. After each piece there will be time to wait to allow judges to write down comments about performance.
After performance you will be ushered into either a follow up clinic with one of the judges, or a sight reading session. You are expected to be on your very best behavior while other people are working with you.
After session is over, load the busses and go home.

Keep in mind… we need to unload the trailer and keep the band room clean, but at the same time, the staff and chaperone parents do not want to have to wait on you to get picked up. Please be in constant communication with your parents!

Band Camp for Band Students

Band camp is mandatory for all band students. It takes place a week or so before school officially begins. Aside from learning marching and music it’s an opportunity to meet new band members and get reacquainted with old ones.

Bring water! Bottles of water, sports drinks, thermos or hydration packs are a very good idea! Lunch and dinner are provided for $5 each meal. Students can bring their own food if they so choose. Meals will be published the week prior for ordering

Casual – shorts and black t-shirts
Athletic shoes and socks. NO SANDALS OR BARE FEET!

Please let your section leader know if you are having problems with getting a ride to rehearsals. We can help you figure it out, but only if you let us know ahead of time!

CLASSES

Bands

Concert, Symphonic and Marching Band. The bands are composed of all wind instrument students. Open auditions are held for Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band at the end of the school year for the following year. Concert Band is the designated band for first year members and also open to all students wishing to play a band instrument. During the school day the bands meet during different class periods.During the fall, all three bands are primarily a marching band which performs during football half time shows, parades, and field competitions. They have a very busy rehearsal and performance schedule during this time. The bands practice for marching band and perform together. The bands perform in the school Winter concert in December.

Percussion Ensemble

This class is made up of all percussion students and all students are members of the Steele Regiment marching band. Students attend all extra marching rehearsals as discussed in the previous section. Members of the percussion class are expected to learn and perform on all instruments associated with percussion playing, including keyboard mallet instruments. During the Spring, the percussion ensemble rehearses the Concert Band music in addition to preparing multiple percussion-only pieces. The group performs at all regular concerts as part of the Concert Band, and as a standalone ensemble. The percussion ensemble also performs at festivals for ratings.

Color Guard

Color Guard consists of everyone enrolled in the Color Guard class. In the fall, Color Guard is a part of the Steele Regiment, and during parades, members perform with flags. During field shows and half time shows, Color Guard performs with various flags to help express the emotion conveyed in a good show. During the spring, Color Guard is known as Winter guard and competes in indoor competitions held in Southern California. They also participate in the department's end of the year concert.

Orchestra

This class offers students the opportunity to play classic orchestral literature and instruments. Students in this group have previous experience, or are completely new to their string instrument. Educational emphasis is placed on the advancement of instrumental technique, further development of music reading, and comprehension skills, independent musicianship, style and literature.
