Color Guard
The Steele Canyon Color Guard combines dance, movement, athleticism, and equipment technique to create exciting visual performances both on the field and in the gym. Using flags, rifles, sabres, dance, and choreography, our students bring music to life through movement and performance.
During the fall, Color Guard performs as an integral part of the award-winning Steele Regiment Marching Band, competing throughout Southern California and performing at football games, community events, and special performances.
In the winter, our performers take center stage with Steele Canyon Winter Guard, where students perform an entirely new competitive production designed specifically for the indoor arena. Winter Guard allows students to further develop their dance and equipment skills while exploring storytelling, character, musicality, and performance at an even deeper level.
No prior experience is necessary! Our program welcomes students from all backgrounds and experience levels. We teach everything students need to know while helping them develop confidence, strength, coordination, leadership, and lifelong friendships.
From Friday night lights to the excitement of competition, Color Guard and Winter Guard give students the opportunity to perform, compete, travel, grow, and become part of an incredible team.

What to Expect for Color Guard Students
Home Football Games
The call time for home football games is 5:00pm for the guard. You will fix your hair and make up (as specified), get dressed in the correct uniform and start stretching. No necklaces or bracelets are allowed while in uniform (except special, medical alert bracelets). Other piercings such as face or ears must have plain, small studs such as clear diamonds, silver, gold, white pearls or clear plugs. At the pre determined time (usually 6-6:15), you will meet outside to warm up. After warm up, we will take equipment bags to the field and meet the band in the quad to march down with 1 flag. Once on the track, you will stand at parade rest until it is time for the star spangled banner or fight song. During the SSB, you DO NOT move, except to sing. During the fight song, you will perform the routine. After that, we will go into the stands for the game. You will pay attention and cheer for the team. When the band plays, you will dance, clap or do the dance you are taught.
When there are 7 minutes left in the 2nd quarter, we will go down to the track to warm up for half-time. After the performance, we return to the stands to cheer. While in the stands, you are only allowed to drink water. No food or other beverages. Only band members are allowed in the band section. No parents, friends or alumni. If you are on the end, you will not spend the game talking to other people. It is a performance and you are there to support our team, not socialize. After the game, we play the fight song on the track and march up to the band room. When you have changed, cleared the area and checked with the captains and instructors, you may leave. This is usually around 9:45-10:00 P.M.

Competitions
Our call time on competition days depends on our performance time. Always bring all uniform items to competitions…we never know what weather or other things can affect what we wear.
Usually, we will practice before leaving school, so be prepared. We will send out more detailed information as the dates approach, but plan for these days to be long, starting early in the morning and getting home late in the evening.

Band Camp for Color Guard Students
During this week, you will continue what you learned in freshman camp as well as learn more. When we arrive, we will stretch with the band, play team building games and do marching basics. During sectional time, we will pick up where we left off at guard camp learning the show. At 5pm, we will have dinner. In the evening we will be at the football field learning drill. Be sure to dress for warm afternoons and cool evenings.

CLASSES
Bands
Concert, Symphonic and Marching Band. The bands are composed of all wind instrument students. Open auditions are held for Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band at the end of the school year for the following year. Concert Band is the designated band for first year members and also open to all students wishing to play a band instrument. During the school day the bands meet during different class periods.During the fall, all three bands are primarily a marching band which performs during football half time shows, parades, and field competitions. They have a very busy rehearsal and performance schedule during this time. The bands practice for marching band and perform together. The bands perform in the school Winter concert in December.
Percussion Ensemble
This class is made up of all percussion students and all students are members of the Steele Regiment marching band. Students attend all extra marching rehearsals as discussed in the previous section. Members of the percussion class are expected to learn and perform on all instruments associated with percussion playing, including keyboard mallet instruments. During the Spring, the percussion ensemble rehearses the Concert Band music in addition to preparing multiple percussion-only pieces. The group performs at all regular concerts as part of the Concert Band, and as a standalone ensemble. The percussion ensemble also performs at festivals for ratings.
Color Guard
Color Guard consists of everyone enrolled in the Color Guard class. In the fall, Color Guard is a part of the Steele Regiment, and during parades, members perform with flags. During field shows and half time shows, Color Guard performs with various flags to help express the emotion conveyed in a good show. During the spring, Color Guard is known as Winter guard and competes in indoor competitions held in Southern California. They also participate in the department's end of the year concert.
Orchestra
This class offers students the opportunity to play classic orchestral literature and instruments. Students in this group have previous experience, or are completely new to their string instrument. Educational emphasis is placed on the advancement of instrumental technique, further development of music reading, and comprehension skills, independent musicianship, style and literature.
