Steele Canyon High School’s standards based theatre curriculum is designed with the fundamental belief that the arts should be taught for their intrinsic value. At every level/dimension of the theatre coursework, students can expect to broaden their knowledge, and challenge their abilities as actors and producers of theatre, while developing a strong understanding of stagecraft, acting practices, audition/rehearsal techniques, character development, and script writing/analysis.

CTE Classes
Steele Canyon High School’s standards based theatre curriculum is designed with the fundamental belief that the arts should be taught for their intrinsic value. At every level/dimension of the theatre coursework, students can expect to broaden their knowledge, and challenge their abilities as actors and producers of theatre, while developing a strong understanding of stagecraft, acting practices, audition/rehearsal techniques, character development, and script writing/analysis. Additionally, theatre history, culture, and design methodologies will be examined and career opportunities will be explored. As a result of this work, students will experience invaluable training in skills necessary for their academic, social, and critical thinking future. Through creating theater, students will grow in their ability to comprehend the world, have empathy, and communicate with others.

CTE Professional Theatre Arts I
is an introductory course in the Performing Arts Pathway of the Arts, Media, and Entertainment Sector. This course introduces the variety of careers in professional theatre. Students will study a range of professional models from Broadway to regional and community theatre to identify established practices and basic competencies required to create professional theatre. This theatre course introduces students to industry vocabulary, basic acting skills, play analysis, scene study, monologues, and performance/production work. Through the fundamentals of movement, vocal work, scene work, monologues, and improvisation, students will learn skills that apply to all areas of employment. Those skills include, but are not limited to: confidence, creativity, collaboration, communication, and commitment. With a concentration both on the basic techniques of acting and the more practical side of preparation, this course is applicable for both those who want to break into the acting world and those who want to reach their maximum potential in their professional lives. This course prepares students to enter post-secondary institutions and satisfies A-G credit completion. This course is needed to complete the pathway sequence. Additionally, in order to meet the metrics of the college and career readiness indicator and students need to take all A-G credit courses.
CTE Professional Theatre Arts Il (Concentrator)
CTE Professional Theatre Arts II (Concentrator) is an intermediate course in the Performing Arts Pathway of the Arts, Media, and Entertainment Sector. This course will build on the foundational skills in a variety of technical and performance disciplines to create project-based life performances in theatre and musical theatre. Students will explore portfolio preparation for live and film/video performance. Students will also be introduced to the business/managerial careers associated with live theatrical performance. Specifically, this course requires students to draw on their fundamental acting, play analysis, scene study, monologue, and performance skills and moves them through more rigorous application of these skills in devised work, improvisation, and analysis of more advanced/diverse professional productions. Students will continue to develop skills that apply to all areas of employment. Those skills include, but are not limited to: confidence, creativity, collaboration, communication, and commitment. With a concentration both on the intermediate techniques of acting and the more practical side of preparation, this course is applicable for both those who want to break into the acting world and those who want to reach their maximum potential in their professional lives. CTE Professional Theatre Arts Ill (Advanced)
(Capstone) is a capstone course in the Performing Arts Pathway of the Arts, Media, and Entertainment Sector. Drawing on in-depth studies of theatre, acting theory, theatre history, technical theatre, and directing, students will create project based performances in theatre, musical theatre, film and video production. Specific stylistic periods of theatre will be addressed, as well as specific scene study techniques in improv, comedy and drama. Students will participate in live productions, as well as explore the technical aspects of storyboarding, scriptwriting, editing, etc. Additionally, students will prepare audition or direction portfolios, learn business or managerial skills, and develop a professional career plan. This course prepares students to enter post-secondary institutions and satisfies A-G credit completion. This course is needed to complete the pathway sequence. Additionally, in order to meet the metrics of the college and career readiness indicator and students need to take all A-G credit courses. *CTE Theatre I and II, as well as teacher approval are prerequisites to this course.
